Hi all, I'm new to this forum but not new to IDIs. I've had several of my own and worked on many.
Now for the question, Has anyone seen severe wear on only one valve guide on each head? I have had 3 sets of heads rebuilt over a period of time, from different engines that had the 3rd guide from the front on the RH bank severely worn(also the same guide on the other side,3rd from rear). I bought a 94 F250 IDI non-turbo yesterday and think it has the same problem (price was right). It has a noticeable miss and a "chuffing" sound in the exhaust. All of the ones I previously found this on were 89-91 models, figured they had improved the heads after that.

The early 7.3s had a tight valve stem seal on the exhaust, now they use a shield .....
The 7.3 is known to wear the stems/guides due to all the valve seals being a little too tight and therefore too little oil reaches the guides to lubricate them. About 160K is a good time to check for guide wear..........

I'm wanting to say that all of the engines I have seen this problem on had between 160K and 180K on the clock. The IDI that I bought has 165K on it. Looks like it's time to pull the heads. All I need is another project
