Currently I have 92 used motor in my 94 stock turbo truck. Head gaskets are leaking oil from every angle. The original motor dropped a rod but didnt touch the head. When I change the head gaskets which set of heads should I use. It would be nice to use the 94 heads so I could surface the head and grind the valves before the job even starts. Also I will likely port the heads I use.
To answer that question correctly you will have to examine the heads very closely, look for cracks between the valves and around the precup. If you see none I would still have them magnafluxed before I spent money rebuilding them.
If you plan on having the heads done over ensure the shop does them to ........ AERA/Navistar specs or they will be useless. Don't ask me how I know ok.......
Per AERA specs:
Stem to guide clearance (intake & exhaust): .0013" - .0055"
Valve height (measured from top of valve to "deck" height)
Intake: .042" - .054" Exhaust: .051" - .063"
Minimum head thickness (from "deck" to valve cover surface): 4.7950"
