I'm preparing to install a 390 FE into my 55 F100. I have a set of the Ford high performance shorty FE cast iron headers that were used on 406 and 427 cars in 62-64. Will these masnifolds work on this installation? Sanderson makes a header for this application but it is 6 weeks delivery and $500. I would really like to have cast iron manifolds if I can.
I plan to retain the stock suspension and transmission ( i have a medium duty truck FE bellhousing with the mounting ears on it)
I'd appreciate any information you all might have on this.-- Pat Allen
I have seen pictures of those manifolds used back when FE's were the engine of choice. They look like they work well ( plus they look cool ). The only thing to watch for woud be around the steering box, depending on how the engine is installed.
My '56 has a 428 with plain vanilla exhaust manifolds. I had to replace a cracked left manifold and got the same part off a smaller FE. Same--same. I don't know the performance version you spoke of, but will vouch there WAS adequate clearance between the common manifold and the stock steering box.
When I converted to Toyota power steering, clearance went to bare minimum. My tightest spot is not at the manifold collector, but at the rearmost exhaust port: comes within an inch of the steering box's pressure line. Thank goodness the engine rocks away from the steering box when I rap the throttle. I retained a Ford PS cooler (looks kinda mickey-mouse) and picked up some thin stainless sheet to fab a heat shield for the box-and-line.
1stoldtruck,
are your manifolds kind of flat?
I may be forced to use those kind. The high performance manifolds have some pretty nice tubes that have short runs into a collector. they really work pretty wekk and are a lot less hassle and quiter than steel tube headers.
Why did you change the steering? How di dyou pick the toyota steering?? -- Pat
