Post '49 project started!

Hey everybody!

My boyfriend and I have recently started restoring a '49 F-1. The preliminary plans are to restore to original, and run it fairly often.
It does run; he drove it home.

But it needs just about everything. We have removed the fenders and the bed so far, and first off we can see the original fenders are in bad shape. (cracking putty, rust) After looking through a lot of catalogs and web sites, I have been unable to find steel replacements (NOS) for this year truck. Plenty of '53 on up, but no 49's.

I'm curious as to why they aren't available. Anybody have the story on this? Or am I missing some huge "Fenders 'R Us" place out there?

We enjoy reading the posts here and will visit often.

Thanks
Wendy and Bob

There's a lot involved making something that big, especially expense for the dies. Aftermarket manufacturers won't tool up to make something like that unless there is a lot of demand for it. Lately, though, front fenders for others have been showing up in steel for brand 'C' '58/'59 pickups with '55/'57's 'coming soon'. '53/'56 F100's are the most popular Ford pickups, but '48/'50's are prety popular too, so I would assume fenders for them will be along in the next few years.

I restored a 48 to stock and found no front or rear steal fenders. They are just not around although most everything else in. I do have a front left fender if you need one. $75 and it is yours...going price around here for things like that. Not in bad shape although some bondo and all.....

So did you keep the bolts intact in the back bed or did you have to cut them off at the nuts? The fender nuts on my 48 wouldn''t budge so I had to cut them off. My 56 were a bit better so I just used some rust remover and could keep the bolts intact.

Guess we'll hang onto the originals and see what happens down the road. We wanted to keep it all steel.... but I guess there's always fiberglas. I'd like to see it restored more original and I have a feeling once the fiberglas goes on there'll be a street rod in the garage! I made him promise me there will be NO FLAMES!!

Most of the bolts on the bed snapped off. On the fenders we had to cut about half of them. Removed fender aprons and the rear bumper(or WHAT was SUPPOSED to be a bumper) today.

Since it's still driveable we have to get our garage situated to accomodate what will probably be a long term immovable vehicle. That should be ready this week, then we're gonna pull it into the garage and start REALLY tearing it down. I'm taking pictures and doing research and just LEARNING stuff in general. This is not his first project; but it's been 20 years or so.

Thanks
Wendy

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Aug-02 AT 04:48 PM (EST)]I just started a 1948 F3 project. My intention is to make it a street rod. If there are any mechanical parts that my F3 might have that you might need, let me know. I don't know what all interchanges between the F1 and F3, however. I also need some fenders, but I am thinking fiberglass all the way. The engine runs and there were a few extra parts that came with it. Sorry about all the garbage. I think my computer hiccupped!

If you are still looking for fenders for your project you might want to check out Mac's Auto Parts on the internet. He had steel when I bought mine last year and also a number of different body, clip and fender patch panels. Good luck
