Ok. I'm here looking for some direction. I have a 2000 Explorer. Since February this year, I have had the "check engine" light 3 times. Each time it was for a 4th cylinder misfire. I have had a tune-up, 3 new sets of plugs, and new wires. Yesterday, I got the message again. What could be causing this <!--StartFragment -->recurring problem? <!--StartFragment -->
Since you have done the items that are the easiest and normally at fault, that leaves few options.
A bad injector, (either leaking or not firing), or, a vacuum issue where that cylinder is getting too much air due to a broken vacuum line or a bad intake gasket for example.
If it was a vacuum line, you will normally have a BANK TOO LEAN code, but not always.
It could be a bad pressure regulator but not likely as it would normally be reflective of other cylinders as well, not just number 4.
The best way to determine the issue is to swap the injector out with another cylinder. When the code comes back, if it is still number 4, then you have an issue with that cylinder or a vacuum issue specific to that cylinder.
If the misfire moves to the other cylinder where you put the injector, then you have defective injector and it needs replaced.
