351W Valves????

I recently bought a 351W (early 85 casting) and along with it came a box with a set of new valves. I was happy since I only paid 135 for the whole thing at an auction. Once I got the heads fully torn down, I ran into a parts issue though. The valves in the heads match the new ones for length, stem size, and head size, but the lock groove is in a different position. The old valves have the lock grooves farther down the stem by .180", or a total of .390" from the stem top to the upper edge of the groove. The Chiltons manual of course has no info on such details, so does anyone have an idea of what the "new" valves might be from? The lock grooves are set at .210" from the top of the stems. Would a parts house have such details in a catalog?? Is there a web site somewhere that has such details??

Thanks in advance,

I would have to guess the ones with the longer tip are made for rail type rockers, older heads were set up for those, no guide plate needed.

Thanks Hemieater,

Hadn't thought of that. Could be the deal. Do you know when the 351W changed to the paired non-rail rocker? That might get things sorted out here.

The weird thing on the longer tip valves is that they were in the heads that came on this engine, and it has the paired non-rail rockers. I'm confused here!!

I'm wondering if the short tip rockers are for something way back like the early 289 that had the pushrods running in slots and the rockers were pedestal types similar to the chevs, and had no rails.

I checked with two different parts warehouses, and the modern catalogs have no information on the valves. Typical I suppose now-a-days.
The short tip intake does have a number on it .... 920 ... but that doesn't cross reference to anything that makes sense. The NAPA guy crossed it to a valve guide?? The exhaust valve is a 911.
