Is there a way of identifying a flathead transmission? I is a floor shift, it seems to only have 4 places to move the shifter. I want to know how many gears and if it is a syncro.
The transmission you describe sounds like the early floor shift 3 speed that was standard on all F-1s until mid year 1950. The collum shift replced it in late 50. The early type had the clutch linkage going directly into the side of the transmission, not the bellhousing. The shifter comes straight out the top.The later transmissions had shift linkage on the side for collum shift. The early floor shift is a late 1930s design.1st gear is not syncronized. Most if not all 1951 F-1s came with a collum shift unless they were equipped with a 4 speed. The 4 speed is not syncronized.
There were also 2 different 3 spds. 49 and 50 used the old car style narrow case 3 spd floor shift as a light duty tranny. In 51 it was a remote shift. All helical gears.
There was also more common heavy duty 3 spd that was used 48- 52 in F1's thru F5's. The case on this one is nearly as large as the bolt ring where it attaches to the bell housing. Helical gears in 2 and 3, spur gears in 1 and reverse.
