Anybody out there know what the pressure should be on the E40D? It's a 96 psd. Who make a good manual for that trannie? I have a couple, but they don't give me pressure, even though the say to run a pressure test for diag problems, It just dosent give me the pressures. I just rebuilt this thing and installed a shift kit, There is just something that dosen't seem right about it. I want to keep an eye on things. It probably is just the new shift kit, but lets make sure.
E4OD-Test Pressures.
Line pressure tested with motor idleing.
Stock Trans
P/N=50-65psi
R=70-100psi
D/2=50-65psi
1=70-100psi
Did you mod the pump on your rebuild. If you did the pressures will be allmost double.
No, I didnt mod the pump, just added the new springs that came with the kit.
Here is what I got for pressure:
P/N- 90 psi
R-125 psi
D, D2, D1- 110
My concern is when shifting into reverse, my pressure drops to almost 0, then climbs up to 125. is that right? or is my valve body possibly leaking? Or is that just a characteristic of the shift kit. It dosent seem to be right.
If you put the transgo springs in the pump. Thats a modded pump (springs and hole drilled for lockup). Did you install a new pressure modulator. (Known as sonnax valve). Iam trying to ballpark pressures. The E4OD came with 2 different valves. .331 or .372. and you should have installed a .427 valve (#96948-01K) if you didnot allready. Either way pressure is eratic.
P/N/D/2--About the same pressure
R/1------About the same pressure
What size did you drill the plate. I have found all 3 drilled to .125 to be the best. And this is with the blue spring in VB.
Most VB's are warped and when you increase the pressure (well you know)
I polish the VB with sandpaper on a sheet of glass with tr fluid so it will seal.
Yours could be warped and leaking.
Thanks for the info. I'm going to pull the pan this weekend to install a temp gauge. While I'm at it, I'll pull the valve body and lap it, just to check. It acts like a leak, It gets worse as the trannie warms up, then it's better when it cools down.
I don't remember what I drilled the holes too, I have the numbers written down at work in my tool box, But if you sugest .125, I'll adjust the holes to match. I know I went conservitive with them, going about mid-way on the recomendations.
As for the pump, I cant remember installing a new sonnax valve-I do remember that there was something extra I should have pick-up, but I was already putting the trans back together,(late at night, of course). I did install the springs, but did not drill a hole_the directions said it was not needed with my pump. Basicly, it it was in the box, it went into the trans unless the directions said not to for my app.
You've been a great help. It's been 15 years since I went through any schooling on transmissions. The last one I learned about was the AOD &
TH700-R4. I've been out of the field for a little while working on other areas.
But thanks for the help
I'll let you know what I find this weekend.
The Sonnax Valve is in the VB. Its the valve in the port where you drilled the two holes to .080/.096 (ex port). Measure it to see the size or order the .427
You can install the probe for the gauge right into the pressure test port.
Good Luck
BTW- Thums up--Most are afraid to tackle a auto trans.
I was wondering if I could put the gauge there. That would be a better place.
Auto trans, No Fear. Thats the best way for me to learn them. And it's not like their really that hard. I think building a hot rod engine is a bit more difficult. More measurements, clearances, gaskets, ect. Oh ya, more SLUGE! -
