My three year old took a blue ink pen to my gray leather seats 2003 6.0 PSD. The seats were perfect. I have tried to remove the pen marks with remedies mentioned on the net (hairspray, eraser) but the ink will not come off. Any suggestions?
plumwagon...it's tough. Most modern car leather is spray dyed. Older cars and some expensive imports used vat dying.
The problem with spray dying is that you can rub through it like paint. It's only on the surface.
As a last resort, you could check with the folks at Leatherique. They seel some excellent products, one of which is a dye for re-doing your seats. Let's hope it doesn;t come to that.
Hate to say it, but it its ballpoint ink, and it's dried fully, you'll probably have to redye the seat to cover it up. Like Matt said, these seats are basically "painted" but the surface remains porous for things like ink. So, whatever takes the ink off will take the color off as well, or at least leave it dull looking.
If that's the case, you don't have much to loose by trying some agressive cleaners on small spot. Also, if you want it re-dyded you can ask a local dealer who they use, or go to the phone book. Vinyl DR or some others are franchises and can normally color match well, but may fade back in about 2 years or so. At least that's my experience.
Thanks for all the suggestions. The Mr. Clean Eraser wouldn't budge the ball point ink., not even goo gone would take it off. Have not yet tried Krud Cutter but at this point all try anything. I have not been too aggressive with the rubbing, I have been using a Q-tip as not to hurt any other areas. I will give an update if I find anything that works.
Remember , you could have a Rebrant in your house hold !
Our son when little used painted above our bedroom headboard when he was 5 , at first we were mad & did not say anything , other than don't do it again. he said he would clean it & we told him as punishment we were going to leave it on the wall .
He never did it again & at 20 he still remebers it even though he now sleep in that room . Hope that helps , he may own the EXc. in a few years.
I left a pen laying on the seat of a cherokee I had, and the entire contents wicked into the fabric seat. After cussing alot, I had some oxyclean(powder) i had never tried. I mixed it, sprayed in on the seat, wiped off what I could, cussed some more, sprayed it again, went inside, came back out in about 20 minutes and it was completely gone! that part of the seat was cleaner than around it so i had to clean the rest of the seat. I was impressed. not sure how well it will work on leather. I have tried it on other things, and it seems to work best on ink. good luck!
