Needs bands and clutches. It is easy to overhaul. The kits i used to get from Fram/ Nappa back in the day came with easy to follow directions. Just remember to soke the clutch packs in ATF over night befor installing. Or limp it over to Amco.
I bought a Haynes Ford Transmission manual and a rebuild kit and was able to rebuild my C4 just fine and was the first time I had totally rebuilt an automatic tranny. Take your time, keep every thing clean/organized, and take pictures before disassembling. There are even rebuild videos out there for rebuilding these trannies.
The rebuild will be quiet easy since it is only a C4, but as for problems of slipping and no forward gears is bad seals in front clutch drum keeping the piston from applying the clutches. as for the slippin in reverse is either low oil pressure or just bad worn out clutches or both. When you overhaul the unit, use air gun to get the the solvent out after cleaning DONT use towels or rags to whip dry.
When assembling the transmission make sure to use fluid to lube up the parts(generously) or if you want to spend the xtra money for assembly lube which isn't a bad idea either. As for organization just get a table that is clean and lay the parts out in a line which will make it really easy for assembly but pay attention to which way a snap ring will come out/go in because some are tapered on one side to fit one way same with steel plates. I cant remember if there were any that I recall. If you decide to take the valve body apart be very careful because of the check ***** (they might fall out) for regulating fluid passages to differant valves. So Good luck n be patient

Limp it over to AAMCO?
You've got to be kidding.
I wouldn't let them blow my horn.
