My 92 F250 with a 5.8 surges when i first start it up cold. After it runs for while, this problem goes away. Sometimes it almost dies. It never does because the computer always recovers it, only to rev it way up and start the cycle all over again.
Does anybody know what this is? Is it the map sensor? The computer does not say anything.
my 93 5.8 acts very similar to yours but dies and then acts flooded i took the idle air control valve off and soaked it with electric parts cleaner several times until the insides were clean. the book says it's not servicable but this seemed to help. my other 93 5.0 was doing the surge but it was running too rich found that the fuel pressure regulator was bad you might want to check your fuel pressure at the injection rail port.
a freind of mine had his turn out to be the throttle position sensor hope this gives you some place to start. I'd go with the cheapist first and work my way up cleaning and testing don't cost much. the map sensor is a possibility too from what i've been told.
I will know more in a few days I just ordered the ford diagnostics service manual for 93 if I find out more I'll let you know
Thanks. I've checked the fuel pressure regulator several times, and every time is has been perfect (right in the middle of the specs). It may be my TPS, because I think I noticed what felt like a dead spot and a some chugging last night. I'll check the voltage and resistance on it today. Thanks for the help.
