Dies in reverse when cold

Hi,

I have a 1985 F-150 with a 302 and a Holley 4bbl carb.

The engine starts up very easily when cold. It idles fine and revvs fine. When I put it into reverse, the engine stumbles and dies. I can start it again and it idles fine but dies when I slip it into reverse. Only after I let it idle and warm up for a full minute or so will it not die in reverse. Once its warm everything is OK.

My other truck is a 1997 F-150 with fuel injection. I can start it and immediately put it in reverse and drive. I'm not that familiar with carbureted trucks. Is this something I have to get used to? Or is there something I can adjust to make it better?

What is the minimum amount of time I should have to wait before being able to drive the truck when starting it cold?

The outside temp is around 75 degrees if it makes a difference.

Thanks,
Sal

Does it do this when put in drive as well? It sounds like the choke needs to be adjusted.

My F-150's EGR isn't working. It never opens. Would this partially explain why the truck dies when I put it into gear if its cold?

Thanks,
Sal
