My father just bought what he thinks is a 1948 Ford truck. It did not come with a title so he is not 100% sure the year. The only numbers he found were
98RC 423210
Can anyone tell me if the number above tell the year?
Once you find out what year it is go to the FTE online store and you can purchase one.
this is one of the first things (buying a manual) you should do. It can save you a lot of headaches.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Sep-02 AT 00:43 AM (EST)]You have a 1949 or 1950 V8 1/2 Ton.
9 = 1949 which was used into 1950
8R = V8
C = 1/2 Ton
423210 = production sequence.
I bought an original shop manual on ebay. It came complete with greasy finger prints on all the tune-up pages.

Johann5 is correct. I just went through this. All info I could find says 1950 serial numbers production sequence starts with 273088, sounds like you have a 1950:-)
To avoid confusion, 6 cyl production sequence #s start 292251 for 1950, 273088 for V8 starting point for 1950. Find it interesting that you could have a V8 truck and a 6 cyl truck with the same production # sequence in the VIN.

I'm probably reading the same book (Bunn) with the starting sequence numbers. It doesn't mention the first digit. It also says there were over a quarter million light trucks built in 1950. Could the sequence number starting with 4 be a very late in the year '50?
Great info guys! Hope you don't mind if I ask a couple of questions that have been bugging me.
To make this even more confusing, I understand Ford used the same numerical sequence until Sept 15, '51 before going to the more modern vin sequence. Does your book list the cutoff dates for the '51 models?
And does it give the production year dates (Jan 1 to Jan 1, or ?)
And is this when Ford went to a fall production schedule for trucks?
I know the '48's debuted in showrooms Jan 16, '48. Thanks Tim
Gosh, I'm embarrased. I missed the 4 in the VIN. I recently titled my old rust bucket, gonna get started ground up, didnt want to put bunch of money into truck with no title, so needed exact year. All my info was from this forum and others. All '50s I personally raied hood on started with 2 sothats where 2 came from. Makes sense late 50. Have read that there is some debate that early 51s used same format but personally do not know.
I was unable to determine the year based on the catalogues I have, but try calling either: (1) Mac's at 1-800-777-0948, or (2) Sacramento Vintage Ford at 1-888-FORD-100. If they can't answer the "year" question off hand, they both carry manuals for the '48.
Sorry couldn't be of more assistance.... Enjoy your project!!!
