Every now and then while im driving, i get a backfire thru the carb...itll stutter and jerk, then take off again. Also, when I shut the truck off, you can here a flame shoot thru the carb.
And how much work is to change the rear seal? Im leaking oil like crazy. My dad needs all the gaskets but I forgot which ones he said I need to get.
My truck too does this, but only when it is cold. I can floor the truck and clear up the symptom but once again like clockwork it returns when cold.
Also when i do turn the truck off after driving it i get a backfire out the exhaust, soft but a definte "whump" when the engine dies after i've been out driving awhile.
Backfire through the carb has several possible causes. Usually it is a lean condition, often from a vacuum leak. Loose carb screws or mounting bolts. Leak at intake manifold. As Redneck says, it can be made worse by overadvanced timing. The really bad news it that a leaky intake valve can cause it too.
i would assume that the backfire out the top of the carb may be a timing prob my truck went throu it right before i had to replace my timing chain ... hell... and as for desperados problem sounds like your truck is dieseling as you turn it off which is also usually a timing problem ... it seems to me that in early 80s model trucks or mine more so that if you retard the timing a little it seems to work because of the quality of gas that we are running throu it now... just something i learned
