hi, i just bought a 1975 f-250 highboy with a 460 including headers and 36 in super swampers. but my question is i have a problem with my power steering, when i bought it there wasnt any fluid in the box and the bozo that had it before me had gear oil in that box and i went ahead and put more in there to fill it up. but my power steering still isnt working what should i do?
it has a pump i just wanted to know if it was the gear oil instead of power steering fluid in the box which was my problem or would i need to change my pump or something else

if you read above then you will see it takes ATF my friend. Not gear oil, not Power steering fluid, Not engine oil, Not brake fluid, Not water.
i know but thats what the guy before me put i know thats not what it needs. my question was that having those substances in there my power steering problem or do i need a new pump?

well like i said. there are several components that can cause the issue. i have no idea why you;ve settled on a pump... but the ram or control valve are very likley candidates.
Does the steering gear box have any power steering hoses going to the steering box?
Then the steering box does take gear oil. There is a plug on top, which is used to refill the steering box.

Are you talking steering pump or steering box?
Can you rephrase the other question?
if he has a garrison type setup on the 75 it takes ATF.. right?
I am unsure what type he currently has?
jeremy18, we need more info and answers to the questions.
so which type are you saying takes the gear oil? i have had pretty much every type of these trucks. i currently have a 73 250 retrofitted to a 75 ram assist. i put ATF in it.
the newer 77.5-79s take steering fluid.
Jeremy... if you do have ram assist, then there are 2 versions. post a pic and we can tell you which you have.
