It's an 1nch and a half long got a spring loaded little arm on it. If ya doint have one on eather side I think thats ok as I am always leaving them off on the older rigs anyway. I beleve all I'ts for is to warm the engine up faster. shure sounds like ya got an exaust restriction somewhere.
If you had an AIR pump I'd think you had too much air going to the left side. Early emissions control was to simply pump air into the exhaust manifold which allowed the excess hydrocarbon to burn.
Get a vacuum gauge and hook it up to the intake manifold. Here is a link that will tell you how to diagnose some problems with the vacuum reading. Let us know what you see on the gauge.
i will run the vacume test this weekend. i work 2nd shift so i dont have a whole lot of time during the day. i was also considering puting my headers on this truck.if i knew for shure it was an exhaust issue i would.i may go ahead and put them on. i will be working on it for awhile anyway, i ordered an hei distributor for it.try and wake it up alittle. but i thank you guys for the help and i will get back to ya about the vacume test. mike
I think you are chasing a white elephant here. Unless the exhaust is a true dual from the manifolds back with no crossover, there's no way the "put your hand over the tailpipe" method is a valid measurement of exhaust temperature. It could simply be that most of the exhaust gases are coming out the other pipe due to some funky bends or a dual outlet muffler that's not really a dual outlet.
yes it has straight pipes from the manifolds back.(no cross overs) i am going to run the vacume test as soon as i get one. that away i know the carb is set right. and rule out other posibilities. if i dont find anything i will let it go. but i will post if i find anything . i really aprechiate the help from all of you guys, thanks mike
