Nothing harder than pulling the intake. After 40 years, it's probably time to change the gaskets anyway, if they haven't been already. Same lifters used in the 289/302. Just check to see if the 260 doesn't have solids.

lifter noise

Problem is the engine has only ran for a couple of hours since a complete rebuild. Pulling intake back off no problem but I will see if it has solids first thanks,

If it's a recent rebuild with a new cam, there's a good chance, you may have a wiped cam lobe.

I've had two do this in the last couple years, both were caused by the lifter failing to spin in it's bore at initial startup. There are lots of others out there too, many claim it's caused by a reduction of Zinc in modern oils. If that were the case in both mine, there would have been more than a single lobe failure. A bad cam core would also result in multiple lobe failures as well.

Thanks, I have other projects on the car but they will have to wait. Sure dont want to buy another cam but whatever it takes I will do. I will start tommorow with the first steps. New oil and filter. check oil pressure, and isolate where the dang noise is coming from. I believe my 260 has standard hydrolic lifters, hope so.
