My 2002 F150 4x4 has a high pitched wine whenever it gets below freezing. This has happened for 3 winters and I have never been able to figure it out. It is so high pitched that I can't till where it is comming from. If I let up in the gas or turn of the overdrive it will stop for a few sesonds. I had the trany fluid/ filter replaced and was told it was in perfect condition. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Can you get the noise to happen when you're sitting there in park if you rev it up a bit?
I'm wondering if you have a belt tensioner or idler pulley problem.
It's been above freezing here in Iowa for a couple weeks. I'm not sure but I don't think it does it unless I'm moving. If it does do it when stationary, I'm sure I would have to rev up the RPM's. I wll check to make sure the next time it gets below freezing. Thanks.
Paul 37, did you ever get this figured out? I seem to have a similar problem. Went out to start the truck today. Temperature was below freezing. Engine had a weird whine to it that went away after it warmed up. It did not sound like a loose belt.
my 02 4.6 does exactly the same thing. It does not appear to affect it's running. Mine will do it in park or on the road when the weather is cold and the engine is cold. I can make it stop by easing up on the throttle. Not sure if that tells anyone anything.
No, I haven't found it yet but it is coming from the engine compartment. It has done it even at idle and it seems to be coming from the front of the engine. Something the serpintine belt is connected to. I also own a '99 Expy and altough it doesn't have the same problem, I was browsing those posts and found it is a common problem there aslo. However I no one seems to have found the cause. I'm going to change my serpintine belt, I don't know why it would help, but it has 120,000 miles on it so it's probably time. I'm also going to change my pcv valve, some one sugested that on the expy page.
Good chance it is the PS pump or the tensioner, you are due to be on your 3rd belt at least. My pump only makes a bad whine when it is extremely cold, probably -10F or lower and it goes away after 30-45 seconds.
