Can anyone tell be how to change the lower ball joint on a 1991 f.150 4x4 ifs front suspension, manual locking hubs, never done them, it needs done for inspection
If you are going to change the lower, do the upper as well... It is time consuming, Remove the wheel, remove and support the brake caliper( tie it up with a coat hanger), Take the screws out of the hub it will pull right off, then remove the two spring clips holding in the hub itself ( one around the outside of the mechanism, and a circlip on the end of the axle) use the cap retaining screws to pull it out, now you are into the bearing nut/nuts, these require a special socket. Once the nut/nuts are removed the rotor and bearings will come right off. There are six nuts retaining the spindle, remove these and if you are lucky you will be able to tap off the spindle without a slidehammer and adapter. pull out the axle( left side pulls out, right side you need to remove the dust boot clamps halfway up the axle and seperate it, be sure you get your u_joints lined up on reassembly) Now you can remove both ball joint nuts and separate the knuckle from the housing/traction beam( I forgot to tell you to unhook the tie rod end first). Take the Knuckle to the work bench and using a ball joint press change the joints, press needed for reinstallation you can hammer them out once the retaining clips are off. U need to remove the upper joint to get the press in position to install the lower joint ( that's why I alway change both).... Reinstallation is reverse order, but get the torque values to get it right.. Big job, takes 2-3 hours a side
