fuel pump
I've had a smell of diesel on my 97 250 4x4 crew for a while, seen some fuel in the valley but figured it was from the dealer changing filters (about 3 months ago). Decided to investigate and I belive the fuel pump is weeping, blue lines are dry but everything else is moist. Got bad enuf that after a 4 hr run today the bottom of the truck shouldn't rust.
I've been searching previous posts but couldn't find the article I was looking for. I thought their was a sticky about changing the fuel pump and wether the IH dealer or Napa was cheaper. Looks snug on the banjo, does the turbo have to come off?
Don't know if this has anything to do with it or not but while passing a real
today when I let out if it the check engine light came on, OD light started flashing and did this for about a mile. After that the lights went out and ran ok, other than from time to time it felt like I was driving a standard and popping the clutch. But after the little studder it ran good. Possible the leaking fuel pump isn't putting out the pressure? Thanks!
The turbo doesn't need to come off if you have a FED engine. The california trucks have a differnet FP. It has a big disc going towards the rear of the engine. Can't miss it or look at the Engine sticker by the dip stick for which one you have.
You can find the part # link in my signature. Be sure to get 3 new blue hoses coming from the fuel pump & new banjo bolt gaskets too.
Drain the fuel filter, loosen the mounts & hoses ect, move it to the front of the engine or just remove it. A craftsman 1 1/4 or 1 3/16 box wrench seems to work good for the banjo bolt under the turbo. It has the correct offset to get in the tight spot.
Remove the FP bolts, spin the engine over by hand until the pump pops up about a half inch and stop. Remove the Fp from it's bore, be carful not to drop the tappet into the engine.
On edit: Here's a link to a detailed set of instructions
