I've been doing alot of research into IFS's for my 53' F-250 and I've decided on Heidts Hot Rod Shop Superide II complete IFS kit. It's one of the more expensive kits but their reputation, the looks of the finished produt, and the one-piece crossmember sold me on it.
You also have the option of using dropped spindles or stock Mustang II spindles depending on how much drop you want.
I'm in the middle of an install now... actually the middle of a volare removal...then a MII install.. I'm using the Heidt's crossmember, stock MII springs/spindles/rack and building the other parts. There is a good thread on the HAMB board on Mustang II units.. written by a pro do builds them for a living.. he rates the Heidts above Fatman's and gives a lot of good detail on the install/build of this unit...
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/TJJ/benchrodding.htm chools the HAMB button at the bottom them go down a page or two in the messages... it's titled "HOW-to Mustang II there's supposed to be a part II coming later..
Why are you pulling the Volare clip out? It looks like you did a real good job on that. The article you wrote almost inspired me to try the same thing.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Sep-02 AT 11:00 PM (EST)]Here's another great Mustang II post from the HAMB. It's titled: 'Who sells the Best Engineered MII kit?'
John,
That is the most incredible post that I have encountered. The author deserves an award! I have been itching to do this for years and have collected most of the dim's on his site already, but the support info is great. I may do some DXF files for laser burning and make these available to other brave FTE members. Thanks for the awesome link!
main problem was clearance with the headers and the control arms and steering box... and using the tilt front end I wanted something prettier to show when the hood was flipped up...
They definately don't like Fatman and that worries me as I felt that they had their act together. I posted a question and they seemed to want to steer me away from the Mus II.
I put a Heitz crossmember and a stock M II IFS on my 54 F100. Only minor problems. I've heard bad things about Fatman from friends but don't really have first hand knowledge.
If you are going to use stock A arms etc, I would advise going ahead and getting a new rack. I prefer manual steering and parts its much harder to get parts for the manual. For instance, you will have to extend the rack 4 inches to go in a F100. It took me forever to find the right extensions - several people told me they had them but the rack diameter is different on the manual and most of them didn't know what they were talking about. I finally found them from Street Rod Engineering in Arizona. Now I need inner tie rod ends and I'm having the same trouble. If I have to give up and but a new rack, the rack from Flaming River is $230 but I will also have to buy new extension (FR uses one 4 inch spacer (($80)) instead of a 2 inch spacer on each end), bushings etc. so that I'm looking at another $400 bucks.
I was planning on using P/S as my y-block will be heavy and I was advised to stay with power. I have a power rack from a 78 that I will be using to start with. Will I have problem finding the rack extenders for it. Can you ask your friends what specifically they didn't like about Fatman? I'll have to check about the placement of the rack on the Fatman crossmember to see if I need (1) 4" or (2) 2".
Hey Guy's, I 'm using a MII kit from Jim Weimer's Rod Garage in my '53.I saw his ad in Street Rodder Magazine and called him and asked alot of questions. His crossmember is like a Fatman kit but was less expensive and he let me know of a little trick. Most of the MII kits are set up for a MII steering gear or for a late model Mustang stering gear but use a '85 T-bird or Cougar steering gear and use '82 Mustang outer tie rod ends .With this set up you don't need rack extenders. And if anyone is considering a MII kit, please give him a call.He will talk to you personelly unlike the "big names" in the business and his kits are excellent.I bought the economy kit that suppossedly needed finish sanding/grinding and the tig welds were so good i did not even touch them.
I've got my crossmember installed (Heidt's).. volare is out and laying in the back yard... patches made and with the exception of grinding down the welds, I 'm ready to hang suspension.. and move ahead...
I've got some shots on my front page... http://jniolon.clubfte.com
