Help No Start Trouble Shooting

So, I have an electrical problem with my '87 ford 300.

It will turn over for ever, but it will not fire. I think it's getting fuel, since when I popped the line off I had a pile of fuel come out.

I have replaced the ignition switch, which did nothing. I am now thinking that it is either the EEC relay or the TFI Modual, or maybe the coil, or maybe the fuel pump relay, since I haven't put a gauge on the fuel pressure.

Does anyone have advice on what steps to take to narrow the problem down. None of the parts are really expensive, but I don't really just want to start replacing stuff with out an idea of what is wrong. I am equiped with meters and test lights, so I feel like I should be able to track this problem down.

Thanks,

Blindlightguy

You need Compression, Ignition and Fuel, for an engine to run. Your sure you have fuel, now you need to check for ignition and compression. I would check for spark first since it easy to do. Pull a plug, connect it to the plug wire and crank it over. If you get spark, check compression, if it don't spark check the wires/cap/rotor. I hope this helps.

Checking the spark is my next step, but assuming there is no spark I don't really know how to check to find out what componate is not working.

If anyone has any advice on what/ how to check the ignition system I sure would apreciate it.

Put a test light on the + (POS) side of the coil with the key on, should have power.
Then put the test light on the - (NEG, Tach) side of the coil and crank the engine, it should flash.

No Power on + side = bad ignition switch or fuse link.
No Flash on - side = bad TFI module, start wire to TFI module, Ignition Coil or PIP sensor.

You may be getting fuel through the lines, but are your injectors may not be working. Unplug one of your injectors and use a volt meter to check if you are getting power when the engine is cranking.

This will not work, all of the injectors have power applied to them when you turn on the key (EEC power relay makes). The EEC then grounds the injectors to fire them.

After mcuh trouble I got a spark plug out and turned over the truck. The plug sparked so I am going to take that as a sign that the ignition system is fine.

I am now running down fuel problems, I have been shorting out the test plug and the relay is clicking, but the pumps are not running. I unplugged the conection for the high pressure pump and had an assistant short the plug and I didn't get any voltage. I am not sure that had a great conection when I was testing but since neither pump has turned on I am thinking it's an electrical problem.

I tested continuty on the intertia switch and that tested out ok.

Should I just replace the relay since they are cheap?

If I don't get this fixed today it is going to the garage, because I don't have the time to deal with this problem.

I just checked for voltage at the inertia switch and with the key in the run position I have twelve volts.

Any ideas on what this all means.
