On a 53 Merc Flathead without the valve seat inserts in the block is it best to stay with the stock valves. Or to just install the stainless valves without the hard inserts, or does the block have to be machined and the hard seats installed. I have what appears to be a good Flathead that hasen't been run much sense being rebuilt. It has been sitting for a long time and I don't want to tear it all the way down at this time unless I have to. I just want to check the valve lap and run it for a while.

If everything else is OK run her the way she is.
The Truck Block had hard seats on both valves for awhile, some had the seats on the exhaust valve only, the last one I picked up doesn't have any and by looking at the cly ridges she's been up and down the road a bunch of times.
