94 F150 idleing problem

I have a 94 F150 w/5.0 EFI Auto. The truck starts fine but when it is out of gear the idle will race up and down two or three times and then die. If I just hit the brake to put it in gear it will die as well but if I give it just a little gas and put in gear it idles fine. Once the truck is in gear there is no problems even going from drive to reverse no problems. It only seems to happen when it is out of gear for a few second or longer. It has the MAF system and that was my guess but that is and expensive guess if it doesn't fix the problem. I have a Snap-on scanner and there are no codes and I don't even see any sensors reading out of norm. I do notice a bit of a horse power loss in acc and it gets a bit of a spark knock in light acceleration from time to time but this is not consistant. This has not been a big deal during the summer months but with winter coming on it would be nice to warm the truck up without being in it.
Thanks for any help
Steve

Had the same problem. Dont know the solution because it went away by itself about 6 months ago. I did however clean and check all the voltages on the IAC and TPS. I also cleaned the throttle body. It went away shortly afterword so I guess something in that area is where you need to look.

Thanks for the reply gent's. I went for the vac lines first with the old starter fluid test and didn't find any thing. I will try cleaning the throtle body at this point anything is worth a shot. 229,000 miles and this is the first trouble I have had the ol girl deserves a little attention even if this doesn't help. Can you post what the voltage should be for the two sensors?

Thanks again

.9-.97 volts at the TPS with throttle closed. 4.5 or close to that at WOT. There is a post that beats this issue to death here
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/2...?highlight=IAC

Might give you some ideas as to what is causing it. Good luck

I would test the lines one by one before ruling them out. Just pull each one off and see if they hold vacuum. Sucking on them is easier and faster than using vacuum pump.
