just some normal "metal expansion" noise would be my guess. as things heat up, it gets worse until its all at the normal running temp...minor if this is the case, but i'm just a lowly carpenter...my $0.02
does the engine have a rapid like "diesel" tick sound to it? my 06 does and so have the last 9 5.4 engines i have owned but the 3v is by far the loudest of the 5.4 engines. the noise never worsened and the UOA's i did showed it was fine so i decided to forget about it.
mine does the same thing. after reading your post, I went out and sure enough it makes that dang noise. I thought is was a belt at first, but by blocking areas of the engine with a piece of cardboard, I narrowed to the the intake.
I can't isolate the noise to the heads or the intake. I did rule the belt/pulleys out though. It is being made by something on the top of the motor somewhere somehow.
The sound actually almost sounds like a little exhaust leak.
sounds to me like it could be piston slap. I would think they had that problem fixed by now though. Ford replaced a bunch of engines around the 1998 model year for that. Probly not a big deal. At least ford replaced the engines... GM (Gods mistake) has had piston slap issues and they deny any responsability.
My 2004 5.4L sounds like a diesel on the right side of the engine. I just bought it and it has 68K miles. Should I be worried about it? Could someone tell me where I can find the TSB for this?

don't think there is a tsp for this specifc noise, there may be an internal Ford tsb!. later, it may cause real damage to your engine. Ford should know by now because others complain of this diesel noise since day one, call Ford!. You may end up replacing all your overhead cam bearings and and all these little parts at the top, if that don't fix it, I know one mechanic say this can also be caused by oil flow problems and cyl. head must be checked or replaced. I believe you should worry about it! and may need to fix it soon to minimze the cost.
6-4-7 is for the pahsers which make common noise like exhuast leak sound at the top of the engine.
when i started the 04 f-150 i was looking at, the 5.4 has around 76,000 miles on it and as soon as it started you heard the ticking with the hood open, ive heard that its just the injectors
So you don't think this is the cam phaser? The truck runs, drives, and idles fine but you can hear it when you are outside the truck or in a drivethrough. When I bought the truck I was told that 5.4L engines make a little noise by other owners so I assumed that is what this was.
I just took my truck to the dealer to have the power sliding window fixed. They listened to the sound and said it was normal. The service writer said that his 2004 had been doing this since new. They started up a used 2004 for me and it sounded exactly the same. I know that of course a dealer would call this normal but I have heard three trucks do the same thing. Do you guys think I should still be worried? The noise does not bother me. I just want this truck to last a long time.
