Driving along fine, accelerated to get up an incline and something "snaped" and it was running very rough. Tried to press on gas pedal to climb hill, but no go. Had it towed home and the next day it started and ran fine.????? The next day after that, it wouldn't start. It tuns over, starts for a second runs very rough, smokes like crazy and dies. I Did a scan and it said it passed with no error codes. Then narrowed it down with manual diagnostic tests with scanner to the MAP Sensor. I replaced the MAP and $160 later, still won't start...doing the same thing. HELP!
Single or dual connectors at the valve covers? If it's single, the connector under the valve cover probably has started to come unplugged. You can usually plug them back in and zip tie them because the locks get weak after a while. Or you can buy a new harness for about 80 bucks. If it has dual connectors, it would more likely be the IDM.

Reason: what if it's dual?
did u get a check engine light??? could possibly be burnt up injector/glow plug harnesses. i had a similar problem where it would smoke like crazy run like crap, but always seemed to start. ended up changin VC gaskets, GP harnesses, INJ harnesses and found a used top of engine harness. have a smell in the oil filler if you can get your nose there and u can smell burnt plastic then i would think you have some connections burnt under the VC
Yes, the check engine light comes on. I will check the connector under the valve cover and give the sniff test to the oil filler.
Thanks guys! i will let you know.
SavageVertigo I am impressed! The connectors under the valve cover were fried. I will replace them tomorrow. My question now is: What caused them to burn up? Old age? or a short in the sytem somewhere. Are the new ones going to fry as well? Also, why didn't a code show up for it?
Usually what causes them to fry is that over time the connection gets poorer and eventually develops enough resistance to melt the plastic. It usually starts on the outer pins because they go to the glow plugs.
Ed-B1 np thats how we all learn about our rigs here, i only knew from past experience. have a good look at the plugs on the top of engine harness they can melt too. ford wants an arm and three legs for it something like 700.00 canadian. i found a used one at a autowrecker up here for a couple hundred. i'd have to say just the enviroment they live in, old age and the hefty current the GP draw would be the culprits there. what did u use to retrive codes? mine didnt have any codes show up on my evolution programer.
More questions!
I just got the valve cover gasket/injector harness from Ford and I noticed that the wires that go to the injectors from the clip are reversed from the old one...on the clip of the old one it has yellow then blue and on the clip of the new one it has blue then yellow. I imagine the yellow is the ground and I am hesitant to plug it in and fry something else with reverse polarity. Did the factory make a mistake???? does it matter? Anyone? SavageVertigo???
