brake hang up

I have rear disc brakes on my 53 its an ECI kit.Iam using2# residual valves front and rear in line as close to the master cylinder as possible, its under the floor board. just this past summer the rear brakes have been hanging up, they dont seem to release after releasing the pedal. I really have to gas on it to get them to release. Any one out there have this problem? thanx Bob.

Is the ECI kit made especially for rear disc brakes? Are you using any type of combination valve? Is the rear brake hose new? Did you use new rear calipers?

I don't think you need to use residual valves with disc brakes. It seems to me that I read somewhere that the residual valves will cause the brakes to hang up a bit. as the pressure from the residual won't let the piston relax.

You need the residual valves if your master cylinder is on the frame. I have a residual valves on my disc brakes and I don't have any problems with dragging brakes. I push the truck around by myself and would notice if it is dragging.

Not having the residual valve would also increase pedal travel since one of its purposes is to keep the brake pads in close proximity to the rotors.

thanx to everyone that checked in on this thread. the only time this happens is after applying the brakes for a stop light. Iam using the eci kit w/ cadillac calipers and firebird rotors. The master cylinder is a 75 ford ltd for 4 wheel disc w/the mustII booster. The fronts are volare, iam using 2# residual valves front and rear close to the master cylinder as possible. The sucker stops on a dime it usually happens after I hard brake it. I do a lot of city driving. thanks again bob.

Call ECI, their pretty good to deal with. When I had a problem, they talked me thru it over the phone.

It sounds like you have all the right parts but you didn't answer any of my questions...so my guess is you have a sticking rear caliper or a plugged rear hose...

Two other things that may be worth checking

The rod that operates your M/C needs at least 1/8" free movement before it contacts the piston

I have seen a brake hose fail internally so it acts like a one way valve, It will allow fluid one way but not back again

Either of these could give the problem you are describing

Regarding your PM: even if all the parts were new, if you have been driving it 5 years and especially not on a regular basis, the fluid could have become contaminated causing the calipers to stick. Sitting seems to be the worst enemy of brake systems. Do you know what condition the fluid is in? You might try bleeding the rear brakes and see if there is rust in the system. A flushing of the entire brake system with new fluid might help but in my experience once a caliper starts sticking there is nothing that will fix it short of rebuilding or replacing.

If your under the floor system has been working well up to this point I see no reason to change to a firewall mounted MC. The fact that it is floor mounted would have no bearing on your current problem.
