I'm in the process of changing my timing belt. I don't have a chilton's so I was wondering if the water pump has to come off to get to it. I have everything off but that and I can't get the timing cover off. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
No the water pump shouldn't, but I think the upper radiator hose/thermostat housing does (to remove one cover bolt). And the crankshaft pully must come off as well, since the lower cover prevents removal from behind it. But once the cover and pully are off, loosen the idler, remove the belt, replace and triple check your timing, piece of cake!
I do beleive BSmitty is correct, I remember replacing my thermostat when I did the timing belt.
I remember removing the intake tube, fan belt, fan and fan shoud, the harmonic balancer (which was a beast), and pushing the A/C to the side. And probably some more misc stuff, It's been almost five years. But I did it in about 1/2 day easy.
You are correct. The pump stays on, but you must drain the cooling system, remove the belts, fan shroud and fan and the pump pulley. Then remove the upper hose and T-stat housing. Then remove the A/C unit, but don't disconnect the lines. Just be sure to keep the engine at TDC, and don't move the cam or crank afterward. Good luck
