hey i got a 86 6.9 c6 4x4 f350 and when it warms up for say 45 minutes idle.. it wont accelerate or rev up.. i smash the pedal to the floor and nothing changes. but right after i start it up it moves and revs just fine.. any idea why it wouldnt rev up?
Diesels do not normally warm up at idle...... on fast idle (1000rpm) for 45 minutes maybe. When was the fuel filter last replaced, do you still have the original water separator on the firewall next to the booster/fender.
ive never replaced the fuel filter but i havent put 100 miles on it, and yes the original water sep is on firewall hooked up.. also it has "allot" of white smoke on start up (i think it was cause a few bad glows) then after it idles for a while it goes away...
Have you tested for fuel flow at the Shrader valve (looks like a tire valve stem) on the fuel filter?
If you have good fuel flow at that point I'd be suspicious of the IP. And I hate to be the one suggesting a problem with the IP - believe you me.
Mine just went out and had to be replaced recently. It was doing something very similar to what you are describing. It would start and run fine when it was cold - or even after sitting and cooling off a while. But as the pump warmed up it took more and more throttle to get it to rev up above idlel. After just a little while it would get to where when you were in gear mashing it all the way to the floor would just barely get it up to a little over 1000 RPMs. In neutral it would rev a little higher - up to about 1500 RPMs, but that was about it.
Swapped the pump with a good used one off my spare motor and it runs like a champ. Apparently the internal drive of the pump was shot and the warmer it got, the less fuel it was pushing.
that sounds exactly like what its doing!!! yours smoked white allot tell it kicked of the high idle? i got a extra good IP laying in my basment maybe i should just swap it in with my line and oring kit / injectors that i was gonna use on the other truck that i blew the head gasket on today...
figures all this bad luck right before my birthday comming up.

Nope, that's the one thing mine never did. It smoked just a little bit from day one. But it didn't get any worse right before it died. From what I've read, white smoke can be caused by an IP problem, but it can also be due to air in the system, or by injectors that are getting weak/worn out

That's what I did. Pulled the IP and injectors from my spare motor and put them on as a set. Worked like a charm. If you do the same, it will pretty much eliminate the possibility of the smoking being caused by the injectors.

Happy birthday, bad timing on the problems. But is there ever really a good time for a rig to break down? Like catfish said, maybe you can ask for parts (or money for parts) for your birthday.

I hear ya' greythorn. I just try to give as good as I get. The guys around here have been putting up with my noob questions and helping me out for a couple of months now.
I still feel like a noob who has a lot to learn, but whenever I see a question that I can answer, I chime in and save some of the gurus the trouble of typing it up - for what may be the 100th time for some of them....
the day we stop learning is the day they put you in the ground this was my old mans saying as i grew up now after 50 years i finally am starting to figur out he wasn't as dumb as i thought he was all those years ago who would have ever thunk it
Greythorn3, I know what you mean ....when I was installing the A/C in my 84, had the old dash off and installing the new one with the A/C ....it a good thing I don't own a gun!
