Hello All,

Just an update....

After replacing some bushings in the linkage dept., i discovered that my fluid level was low in the master cylinder. filled it up, problem went away. however, i've discovered that there must be a leak somewhere in the system as i checked the fluid level tonight and it was low. there doesn't seem to be any leakage near the master cylinder, so i'm assuming (unfortunately) that the main problem lies with the slave cylinder....aargh.

Any advice or tips? I'm assuming I'm going to have to get inside the bell housing to to replace the slave cylinder. Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance!

As long as it isn't leaking back from the MC.. It's leaking where you can't see it.

I see a clutch slave in your future. Might as well replace the clutch while your in there.

I have replaced my slave cylinder twice in the last four years. Both times it went out it was very cold out and the fluid was pretty thick and when i went to push the clutch in to start my pickup it never came out. Had to do the same thing as you and pull the pedal up with the tip of my foot. With the one i have in right now my solution to try stop this was to drain the whole system of the regular dot3 brake fluid and start over with synthetic that is thinner in the cold weather. I think the slave cylinder is actually only around $90 but the taking the tranny out to replace it is what costs the most. I would think the average backyard mechanic could easily replace this in a long afternoon with the help of a jack and a friend. The only special tool you need is the tool to disconnect the hose from the old slave cylinder. Other than that i think there are 2-3 bolts that actually hold the cylinder to the tranny.

if you're a big boy like me you don't need the jack. the transmission wieghs about 100 lbs dry. The hardest part of the job is getting the crossmember out. It took me about 6 hours laying on my back from start to finish.

That special tool is also used on the fuel line and A/C lines. Costs about $10.00 at Autozone for a set of them.
