Heated Seat Not working

Just got my 2000 Navi, and had an opportunity to use the heated seat this AM. The light comes on when I push the button, but the seat stayed cold even after 10 minutes. I see on some threads here that it may be the element or seat pad. Does anyone know how I would go about verifying this without taking it to the dealer? Any other fixes other than to replace the seat pad (sounded pretty expensive)?
