I am about to change the oil in my 01 7.3 PSD Excursion and wanted to get some onboard recommendations of oil filters. I don't have an oil by-pass at the time and this is something for the future and am looking at the oil guard, but until those $ show what would you recommend to give me the best possible filtering today.
I don't mind paying a little more if it returns on its investment.
I've seen several posts on here regarding how well the Fram actually works. From what I read, guys running UOA's report that the Fram doesn't clean as well, and the oil gets dirty faster.
You can change it if you want. There's no need to drain the oil out of the pan if you just want to change the filter. Just fill up a new filter with a couple quarts of fresh oil before you put it on.
Never heard of either? That's 'cause they are best known in the world of diesels, not gassers. That's not to say that they are unheard of in the world of gasoline-powered trucks. I've been using Baldwin B2's for forty-some years in Mopigs and Fords.
But, compression ignition is a whole 'nuther world.

after doing some research on what specs i could find i have stoped using the motorcraft filters and now am using mobil 1 oil filters. from the info i found they are one of the best filters you can get.
Every filter I've seen is 30 microns, Fleetguard, Baldwin, Motorcraft, Wix, Napa
Mobil 1 and I think K&N are both 10 micron.
I run the mobil 1 cause its 10 micron and same price as others.
If Im able to post the link there is a oil filter study that is quite interesting. Basically, Frams have 25% less filter media and use cardboard where there should be metal. A real good filter is the Mobil 1 and so are the Purolators. Here is the filter study.
10 micron is great but the question then becomes doe sit ahve sufficient flow to keep up with the demands of the lube system. my thought are if you want finer than stock filtering you should get a bypass system and not mees with the a full flow filter that though it filters better it restricts the flow.
I would be interested in what IH recommends for filtering. Anybody have any info there?
