Squeaking in Front-end
After I noticed I posted this in the wrong forum, I will try again here.
I have a 2001 f-350 4X4 with manual hubs. The front differential has the proper amount of oil in it, as does the transfer case.
My problem is when I lock the hubs in, I hear a squeaking (squealing) sound from the front axle area while driving. If I stop and unlock the hubs the squeaking will continue until the front drive shaft stops turning. The sound is NOT like a bearing turning in its race (ringy-dingy sound). It is definitely a squeak and it only appears when the hubs are turned in. The squeak comes and goes as I drive along, for example, if I hit a real slippery spot in the road and all tires are spinning in the mud, the squeak goes away for a while.
I think my problem is a bearing at either end of the front driveshaft, but I have no experience with R&R'ing the front drive shaft. Could the differential pinion seals possibly cause this type of squeaking? Any ideas you guys have would sure be appreciated. thanks.
Rob
