chrome plating questions

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Oct-02 AT 09:22 AM (EST)]I wasn't quite sure where to post this... so I put it in the "appearance" forum... but we all know the REAL experts are in this forum... so here's my question

I know there is a difference in "commercial" grade chrome plating and "professional" or "show" grade plating. My question is... can commercial grade plating be polished up to show grade and how much of a hassle/job is it. I have access to the commercial grade work and I could get some suspension parts plated really cheap.. but can it be made to look like show chrome ???

thanks

john

chrome plating questions

The cost of show chrome is in the prep work. You start by giving him a smooth piece with all pits and flaws removed.
If you can work out a deal with a commercial plater who will allow you to bring the parts home for polishing between the various dips then go for it.

Ive been using an industrial plater for years. As long as I dont interrupt his work flow he could care less. Since numerous other customer parts are dipped at a time my costs are very low.

However most industrial platers dont have the chemicals for potmetal. I still do all the prep work at home.

As Im into rods, customs and restorations as well as trucks Ive spent a lot of time researching the subject.
