engine heats when when heater is on.
On most ford trucks since about 1973 the hot coolant flows through the heater all the time, and you direct airflow acrossed the heatercore to heat your interior, Via a door in the heater box. I have not seen a valve in a Ford heater line on anything newer than that. If you have been running it with the rad cap off, get a heater/Ac thermometer and put it in the filler neck and check the coolant temperature, turn on the heater, and watch the thermometer to see if the temperature climbs. If it does not climb but you guage goes up, look for a problem with the guage. Just remember that if you have a 180 degree thermostat, when you get to operating temp you should be 180+ in the rad. If the rad is cool and your heater lines are hot, like the others said, CHECK the thermostat. Remember Safety First and never open a hot radiator. If you don't have access to a heating thermometer, look for a thermometer for checking to see if meat is cooked as long as it goes high enough...
