Just bought an 05 F250 PSD 4x4 after retiring my 97 F250. Much to my surprise, it didn't come with a keyless entry. ( I thought all cars did these days). Anyway, any recommendations for an aftermarket Keyless entry / security system? Dealer wants $599 for the Ford factory System
I was caught off guard also . . . my three prior F-150 XLT's all had remote keyless entry without ordering anything special. When I took delivery of my 2004 F-250SD I asked where the fobs were, I then found out the XLT did not come with keyless entry standard, it was an option.
Do any of the aftermrket remote entry/starter systems offer vehicle specific wire harnesses to minimize cutting into the stock wiring?
Boy, I thought I was the only one that was caught off guard by not getting key fobs with my 2006SD XLT. I went and purchased the Ford system thinking that it would plug in somewhere therefore being an easy install.....nope, what a pain in the BUTT! Not only do you have to hard wire it in (multiple cuts and splices) but it did not come complete either, I had to buy some relays as well! What should have been a 2-3 hour project turned out to be 6 hours of a lot of cursing. The problem I ran into had to do with the relays that the kit did not come with. All the kit said was to purchase 2 aftermarket 12vdc automotive 5 pin relays. Well come to find out, there are several different 5 pin relays out there and after my 5th hour working on it (and multiple blown fuses), I realized that I probalbly had the wrong ones. So I went back to the store, picked up a couple of different relays and 15 minutes later, had it working.
So, the moral of this story....don't buy the Ford system! There has to be better aftermarket ones out there. Just a quick glance I noticed that Crutchfield.com has a kit AND IT COMES WITH THE RELAYS!!
I have been selling and installing car audio and security for 20 years. Autopage in my opinion is the best to be had. A basic keyless entry system should run $139 or so installed on you SD. Like the other post said it is a 5 wire locking system which means you will need a couple of relays but they are actually not that hard to hook up. If you need help with anything shoot me an email or a pm and I will get back to you with a wire color and location sheet in order to cut down on the trouble. Don't worry about cutting the wires, 3m makes what is called a t-tap that just pinches over the factory wire and a spade that plugs into that so no cutting on most of them.
