Hi, could you please advise me on this, i have been offered a 1988 302, with 22,000 miles, i am used to working on a 1973 302, are they the same, or better, i mean can you swop waterpumps and the like over, here in England its hard to find Ford 302s, look farward to the replys, regards Alan.
Get it! Like you say on your side of the pond they aren't easy to find. How many chances do you think you will get at find a motor with 22,00 miles on it.If you have room store it until you need it. All the parts on your 302 will fit. Some things you will have to consider. The 73 will have a 28oz imbalance for the motor the 88 will be 50oz. The harmonic blancers will be different besides just the weight. The 73 will be a 3 hole and the 88 will be 4 hole. Your Flexplate or flywheel will be a different weight too. The flex or flywheel you should be able to get redone for the different weight. What your options for aftermarket parts? Do you have something like Summit or Jegs? You might need a different distributor gear if it's a roller cam motor too.
Everything i have is for 28oz, but like you say 22,00 miles, what is HP for a standard 1988 motor? we do have a company for v8 parts, but very expensive, regards Alan.
I'd just make sure the new motor has both the damper and flywheel/flexplate intact and use them (as mentioned above, your '73 dampher and flywheel won't work on the '88 engine). About 185hp was the norm for a factory 302 in that era, but you can do a lot to help that.

The heads should be as good or better than yours if they are stock.
You wouldn't happen to know what it came out of? It can make a difference.
Most are like he said 185hp. If it happens to be a HO motor it's 225hp. The ballancer should really be the only issue. There's companies here in the states that can rebuild and reweight your HB for the newer motor. Any chance you have someone to do that or ship yours over here?
I will try and find out what the motor came out of, the reason i have the 28oz parts is because i just bought a 302 engine, and when i stripped it down the crankcase has been filled with filler right at the front near the timing chain cover, where there is a hole, looks like frost damage, i might be able to get it welded, the reason i like the early engines is because i have built three and i know what to do, regards Alan.
Alan, there are a few other differences but nothing that should be of consequence to you. Along with the imbalance weight change already mentioned (which occured in 1981, BTW) there was change to a one-piece rear crank seal. Also, insofar as the waterpump is concerned, an '88 should be serpentine belt-driven which means that the water pump is reverse-rotation from the standard V-groove pully water pump. The oil pan is probably dual-sump rather than front-sump and the dipstick location was moved to the driver's side of the block rather than in the front timing cover as yours is. There were several different front covers over the years and the water pump must be matched to the cover.
