I bought a '96 250 earlier this year and it has an aftermarket Pioneer cd player in the dash. Does anybody know how these units come out? There is some wiring I need to check behind it but not sure how to remove it. There is a trim piece around it that I can easily remove, but then I'm not seeing any fasteners. Is there a special tool that slides in to release the unit? Thanks

1. Disconnect the battery to starter relay cable (14300).
2. Insert Radio Removing Tools T87P-19061-A into radio face plate. Press in 25.4mm (1 inch) to release radio retaining clips. While flexing the radio removal tool outward, away from the center of the radio chassis (18806), pull radio chassis outward from instrument panel (04320) using tool as handles.
3. Disconnect the radio antenna lead in cable (18812) and radio wiring connectors.
I just use 4 8b nails Come out just as easy cost nada and I don't have to look for "the special tool". Which I have , but its never where I'm at at time. Good luck

Pioneer is a PITA for their units. Usually you will know a guy that knows a guy that works at Best Buy or the like. Every unit sold has these tools and they usually throw them away when they're done.
Thanks for all the input guys, but I would like to emphsize that this is an AFTERMARKET Pioneer unit. I am familiar with the OEM Ford tool, but that is not going to work with this setup. As one guy mentioned, I think I need to slide something on the sides of the unit to release it.
assuming the dash is the same on a 96 f250 and 150 are the same, on mine i installed a pioneer cd player, the one with blue backlighting not sure of a model #.
to remove mine i pop off the trim piece, then using a pair of needle nose plyers i lightly pull the metal frame around the cd player, jumping from side to side top to bottom. after a couple of light pulls on each side its usally pulled out far enough to remove it by hand. its a very tight fit, dont go yanking the thing with all your might.
there may also be a plastic clip on the back of the cd player, if someone took it off the factory unit and put it on the aftermarket one, that slids on a track behind the dash to support the back of the cd player.
putting the unit back in is a matter off squaring it up in the hole and lightly pushing it back into place
There is a set of Pioneer removal tools on eBay for $0.99. I don't think you really need them but there is a good pic of them on eBay. They are about 1/4" tall, very thin and about 4" long. Insert in the right and left sides and out pops the receiver. You could probably make a set out of aluminum house trim if you happen to have a scrap, its not much thicker than that.
All that said, sometimes the wiring and/or the adapters can become caught on the DIN sleeve or other objects behind the receiver. In that case, just be very gentle.
