Arrrrgh!!!
My '77 F-100 Ranger needs a new tranny. I figured it was a C4 but the mechanic says its an FMX. Is he being truthful? I understand that the FMX is difficult to service. Should I switch it to another transmission (C4, C6 ??) or should I rebuild? Can anyone explain what the difficulties would be if I switched it?
Thanks,
Ernie
Thanks Mil1ion,
I don't know how to identify a transmission. I love my truck but I don't have any mechanic experience. Can the FMX simply be switched for a C6 or will the drive shaft have to modified as my mechanic suggested?
This is an hydraulically controlled rear wheel drive transmission. It has a cast iron case and an aluminum bell housing and extension housing. It is similar in appearance to the Fordomatic that was used since 1951 and the Borg-Warner BW8 and BW12, but almost none of the parts are interchangeable. 1968 was a cross-over year where the Fordomatic was used in some vehicles for part of the year before changing over to the FMX.
Thomas,
thank you for the pictures of the FMX. Those will help me! Its a little embarassing to post on this forum when I know so little about the subject. I really appreciate the help. Do you know whether I can simply switch the FMX for a C6 without added hassel? Is it better to rebuild the FMX? Oh, and by the way the engine is a 302.
Thanks again,
Ernie
Better miliage for one and easier to get parts for it. It should be a problem you just need to make sure you get the right bolt pattern to match it to the 302. You might have to change the tail housing and shaft. But i'm sure someone will have better info than i and your welcome i do hope they help.
Don't mean to stray too far from the subject, but I gotta ask Thomasm67: Why is it that you live in NE, but you're a member of the KS chapter? Not trying to be rude. Just curious...!
Thomas,
I was reading some older posts and I see you've had the pleasure of discussing this issue before. I hope my questions don't sound like a broken record to you.
Better milage is plus. I drive it back and forth from NY to FL and the gas isn't cheap. When you said "it should be a problem" did you mean it should NOT be a problem? Do you have any ideas about the cost of such a swap?
Yes i meant not a problem i was tired and for Shoot4 Fun i live in Falls City which is right on the stateline and at the time there was no Nebraska Chapter so i join up and have not regretted it once have met alot of great people. Yes going with a AOD would give you an overdrive option for your trips down to FL and back. Cost wise would be negible and well worth it. best bet is to research tranny swaps on here i am positive that someone has done such a swap and will be willing to give you any info they have to help you. Edit
Did some searching here is a place that might have everything you need for a swap
Thomas, Mil1on,
thanks. I'll check out the links you posted. This has been a great help to me. I'll let you know what success or lack of success I have.
Ernie
...Its a little embarassing to post on this forum when I know so little about the subject. I really appreciate the help....
Don't be embarassed to post any questions on here, at one time or another, everyone on this forum didn't know anything about these trucks and had to learn. And asking questions from masters is the best way to do it. I know, I do it all the time.
also, the aod is a overdrive unit whereas the c-4, c-6 and fmx are straight drive units... hence the better gas milage... It should help out a ton on the trips up the east coast. The extra cost that you might incure doing the swap will be made up 10 fold by driving it and the savings you will have in gas and engine wear. think of it as a no brainer.
