Question trans swap

My driver w/302 & c4 is about to have the tranny die. I've got a good fmx sitting on the floor. Wondered if there was a bunch of mods to put in & if rear yoke was the same. also wondered about the lengths of the trans.
thanks

I'll bet the fmx was behind a 352/360 and the bell is different. Most of the 302s had C4s. IF it were mine I would be looking at an overdrive to go behind it. Gas is pretty cheep today compared to 3 months ago, but it will be going back up I expect.

You can look to see if the bells will swap between the fmx and C4, I didn't think about both of them have removable bells. I don't recall reading hear about a bell swap.

There a bit of confusion here, because the actual FMX transmission was not introduced till 1969 and was never used in F100/350's excepting 1973/77 F350's with the 300 I-6.

Some people call the MX Cruise-O-Matic used on 1965/67 F100/350's w/352's an FMX, but Ford never refered to an MX as an FMX.

The MX was introduced in 1958 and besides 1965/67 F100/350 w/352's, was used on full sized Fords (Custom/Galaxie/LTD), Mercury's and Thunderbirds with 352 and 390 engines thru 1967.

The true FMX was used on cars from 1969 thru 1979 with the following engines: 302, 351C 2V, 351M & 351W.

Some of the cars with these engines also used C4's and C6's, it depended on the application.

What A/T is this?

On the drivers side of the trans case above the manual control lever, or bolted on the servo cover is the Ford transmission ID tag.

There will be a three digit prefix similar to this: PHB, and either a two or three digit suffix, with one or two letters, then in some cases, a number...like these examples: C1 or CZ1.

If the tag is missing, locate the ID number from the case itself (example: C9AP-AA).

Post all the codes or numbers you find here.here.

Bill, Maybe you can get the world politically correct if you keep hammering away at it, but I doubt it will happen in your lifetime. You know all 360s are really 390s.

You know me, I aint got no book, but he said there was a tranny on the floor, he didn't say if it was from an airplane or a train. My recall and I could be wrong the fmx was not used behind a 302.

If those two are correct, it isn't me that is confused.

No MX C-O-M was used with a 302.

The only FMX to be used in an F Series truck: 1973/77 F350's with 300 I-6's.

FMX's were primarily used in cars.

FMX & 302 = 1969/72 Galaxie/LTD w/column shift / 1971/73 Torino w/column shift / 1972/73 Mustang / Prolly more examples...

Who's confusing the OP?

You are....because you refered to the MX Cruise-O-Matic as an FMX. It is not the same transmission, John.

No MX's after 1967, no FMX's till 1969.

Stop your BS Bill, The OP says that he has a good FMX sitting on the floor. He never said a thing about a MX or C-O-M or a year model. That is all caca that you came up with.

You are implying that the OP doesn't have a FMX tranny on the floor as he stated that he does. That is wrong, bro. At least find out from him first.

OXOXOX

You are the one that implied he has a "FMX" transmission as used in 352/360's, not I.

If it's from a 1965/67, it is not an FMX....it's an MX.

The FMX WAS NEVER USED WITH 352/360/390 ENGINES, PERIOD!

AND...No 360 engine ever used an MX or FMX trans, either.

The only A/T used with the 360 was the C6.

You started all this BULL CHIT with your wrong and mis-leading info by refering to the MX trans as an FMX!

GET A ******* GRIP!

Sorry about the confusion. I should have put in that the fmx is out of a 77 ranchero w/ a 351w.

Vin, That tranny probably will work, but likely will require mods of some kind. You could have to have the drive shaft cut. It will require some measuring to confirm.

You will come out further on the other end rebuilding the C4. I know I would be looking for an overdrive to help defray the cost of driving the truck.

Don't mind Bill and his caca, we bees buds.

COMs or MX/FMXs are outdated and are a step down from a C4, C5 (or C6 depending on the application). Save yourself a headache and rebuild the C4. You can probably rebuild it yourself for $125.

Don't bother checking the numbers Bill, because...

351C's, depending on the application, could have three different A/T's: C4, FMX, C6.

The C4 has 11 trans pan bolt holes, the FMX has 14, the C6 has 17.

Most peeps get numbers that are cast on the case or extension housing, thinking these are the ID numbers.

They are not.

All the numbers are.....are the Ford ID numbers for the particular part the number came from.

The original FoMoCo transmission ID tag was bolted or riveted to the case above the manual control lever, or bolted on the servo cover.

Just like rear axle ID tags, the tranny ID tags are usually missing by now.
