Hi Im trouble shoting my 200 Explorer 4.0 shov and would like to have some tips on replacing the ecu temp sensor I see 2 sensors that look the same and they are almost impossible to get at The truck runs rough and stalls when its cold Ive installed new plugs wires cleaned the crank sensor and cleaned the idle valve
Any ideas would be great
I am pretty sure you have one of two issues. Either a dirty or defective IAC or your ECM/ECU temp sensor is defective.
These two items create very similar issues in appearance.
And yes, the two sensors do look very close in appearance. Get to one of them and unplug it. If the dash gauge goes off the chart you know it is the other sensor.
Thanks for the reply Any ideas on the best way to get at the sensor Its in behind the thermostat housing
thanks bob

The most common cause of rough running and stalling when cold on a 4.0 SOHC is bad intake manifold gaskets.
With the engine idling cold you can spray some Carb-Medic, or similar carb cleaner, around the intake manifold and see if the idle changes. If it does you've got a vacuum leak caused by the gaskets.
Your dealer probably keeps the gaskets in stock.
