Since you have an early 99, flip the hose that goes from the OEM filter to the CCV (Crank Case Vent) tube around. It will fit better that way. I ended up getting a 45* piece of big truck exhaust pipe to go from that tube to the filter itself.

I also used an old shoe, an old battery blanket, and an old empty 1 qt bottle of atf to "shoe"-horn it in there...

I went to a big rig supply shop on Old Bayshore Road in San Jose, CA. I would try your local big rig shop because bending tubing that big is tough.

Yes, Kris, but only from the forum. You wrote a fantastic thesis and list of recommended mods "Too many Options: Confused" ---- you gave me 13 paragraphs of mods I could make with $2000 and 12 months to do it in.

I am following up on your recommendations, one-by-one.

And it's great to see that you are a supporter with such few posts. Some guy's have been here for over a year and have thousands of posts, but are too cheap to donate $15.

Not to hijack but yeah, Blue Bell rocks!

If you're in Texas then you know what that's all about.

Unhappy Thermocouple?

OK, guys - I'm looking at this 46637 hog filter install.

1. Is this filter supposed to sit in the box or simply rest on the wheel well?
2. What is to be done with the thermistor? I assume it measures ambient air temp - does it just hang after install of the 46637?
3. Is there anything to be done with the ram air duct that's inside the fender wall?
4. Does the 46637 get its air supply from an undirected source?, i.e. just sitting there?

I have tried to search for Kris' post on the "13 paragraphs of mods I could make with $2000 and 12 months to do it in" you referred to. Can you PLEASE post a link for my reference?

Sorry...I'll get better at using the search feature, I promise!

Thanks!
Dan

Hey lakerat, when I did mine it took me a while to figure out how to angle it in so it fit right. If you look a guzzle's pics you can tell just the edge of the filter sits on the base of the old filter box base. I removed only the old filter box and fresh air tube. Mine is an '02 so they may be slightly different. There were like two rails in my old filter box base running front and back and the edge of the filter sat right inside the outer rail and angled up over the plastic piece that was left from the cold air intake tube. It sits at about a 45 degree angle from the wheel well to the intake tube. It took a little angling to get it right, just play with it you'll get it. Once it's in there you'll step back and say, "cool, its a perfect fit". I just wire tied the "thermistor" to the under rail of the old air box base so it still measures temp close to the filter. Yes the filter gets an undirected source of air. Some people use the pieces of 4" tube and I could see how it would make it a little easier to clamp in there, but I'm cheap I just worked with it till I got it, didn't even buy a new clamp or anything. Works great!

There is this little free mod called a "Zoodad" mod that is named after a member Zoodad, and it is cutting a hole in the radiator shroud. I have done it to both sides now, and all it does it let cool air right into the engine bay. It isn't really a performance mod, and it shouldn't be debated on wether or not it gived a performance gain. It's just one of those little mods that seperates a "Ford Truck Owner" from a "Ford Truck Enthusiast." Here is a pic of it, and if you look, you can see the air filter. It lets the air come in and go right up to the snorkle, and to the filter. "Ram air" on a diesel is kind of urinating in the wind, as the Turbocharger is more of a ram air system than driving at 250mph. It just lets COOLER air and not engine compartment air in the filter at slower speeds, as when you are cruising on the highway, the underhood temp is almost the same as ambient.

It's very easy to see on a stock grille, but not with my billet grille.

Dcwhipple: here's the thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...confusion.html
