Exclamation This filter's H-U-G-E!!!!

Holy ?$%#!!! On recommendation by one of our learned colleagues, I ordered a WIX (5)46637 air filter to upgrade the stock filter on my '99 7.3 PSD. I'm not sure what I expected but [expletive deleted]!! This thing belongs on a D9 dozer!

The next logical question is......who else has put one of these hogs on, what's the parts list, DO YOU HAVE ANY PIX??

My lord, it scared me to death when I took it out of the box - I even called fleetfilter thinking a mistake had been made.

I am a fair gas mechanic but this behemoth is intimidating as all get out!

Help! (he meekishly squeals)

You should be able to slide the stock air duct over the end or the filter. or use a piece of 4' exhaust tube and use it as an extension and clamp it on both sides

First figure out if you have an early 99 or a 99.5.

OK, Fat...the door plate (sticker) shows 6/98 - I guess an early 99, huh? Now what?

Mine is a pre 99, I warmed up the intake, then stretched it over the filter and clamped it down. I personally haven't have any issues with it popping off. Other have and used a small piece of 4" tubing to go in between the two and clamp both. I think I still have a few pics of it in my gallery.

Understand about the 4" spacer - seems like it would relieve a little tension of the intake hose. Does the filter sit inside of the lower housing of the factory air box or is the entire box removed?

You have to take the entire box out and then just put the base back in. I don't remember if I had to take the battery out as well, seems like you did in order to access the bolts. All that will be left is the front portion of the snorkel that is attached to the batter cover. The back half will be removed.

That makes sense. Thanks.

By the way..."MJ"...I checked out "Guzzle's"website - good info, easy to do. I appreciate the link and advice.

Still tryin' to understand what the date of manufacture has to do with this mod?

Well before a certain date, there is an "early 99", and after that, it is a "late 99". The late model air intake is different, and it basically is a slide-in fit for the late model air intake tubes. The tube for the early 99 trucks are different, and they require some modification sometimes, like a piece of 4" exhaust pipe extending the length a little bit.

ON pre99 the turbo and intake is smaller and a little different design. My inlet at the stock box is still 4", I guess some are 3.5" not sure on that, but I had no problems with mine. I do know the inlet diameter at the turbo is smaller, and we already have a wicked wheel equivalent in our turbos. Also, the front axle was changed in March of 99, so the brakes and lift kit parts are different as well.

For intake, anything in 98 is pre99
For front axled, March of 99 and earlier -Pre, anything April or later-Late99

Thanks to both of you for that info. Kris - you should'a warned me (snicker) - it scared me to death when I saw that thing! It's all beginning to make sense to me now. I think I'll stick this bad boy in tomorrow. Kris, my 5" exhaust should be in either Friday or Monday - that ought'a be fun (fingers crossed)!

I remember someone telling me that they went to Napa and asked for the 6637 filter for their Powerstroke, and they came out with the small, panel-type stock filter. He said that the 6637 filter was designed for a vibratory roller with a 5.9L scummins in it, that it wouldn't fit on a powerstroke. Little did he know....
I just convinced my buddy from school to put this filter on his dad's truck, and he is in love with it.

Yeah! Within seconds of opening the box (I ordered 2) and after a short squeal of anguish, I called fleetfilter thinking they had made a mistake. The part number on the filter is "5"46637, not the 46637 number you gave me. The person I talked to said he kind'a anticipated my call since most first time buyers of that filter yell "What the Heck!?!?" He told me that they have sold many of this filter for just this purpose and suggested I contact a couple of forums for assistance in installation. Of course, I came home to FTE where the real knowledge is (suck-up is genuine).

I'm sure I'll have more questions as time goes on and the mods progress - by the way: now that I've seen this honker of a filter, the power can't do anything but go up especially after I get the new 5" exhaust installed. Looking forward to it! Thanks for everything, Kris - and thanks to everyone else on the thread.

Yowee---I'll be the envy of the deer lease this weekend!
