2.3 driveability problems

Ok SO i have a 95 ranger with the 2.3l that I just recently purchased. It has severe driveability issues. First off if I blip the throttle it bogs and almost dies. It seems like a vaccum leak to me, but so far I haven't found a leak. I hooked up my timing light up and when I blip the throttle it retards the timing to 10 degress from 25. I don't know if the timing thing is the cause of the problem or just a side effect of it.
Also the truck has no power on the road. I can't get it above 50mph. And when I do get it to 50 it stumbles and feels like I am hitting a wall. ALso it idles really rough.
I am not looking for a magic fix all. just for you guys to set me in the right direction of diagonsing my problems. Thanks in advance

What's your base timing set at? It should be around 10 deg. BTDC. From your post, it sounds like the timing is set at 25 deg. There should be a procedure listed on the cooling fan duct or radiator header. Basically you disconnect the spark advance and rotate the distributor to get the correct timing. This could be a major cause of you idling and power issues. For a quick test, loosen the distributor (I think it's a 1/2" bolt) and rotate it to find a better idle position. Tighten the dizzy down and drive it doen the road to see if that fixed the problem.

I can't remember if a '95 is OBD1 or OBD2, but either way, is it throwing a code? That's where I'd start.

Pretty sure there's no distributor on a '95, either.

*Have you done a tune up since you bought it?

You might want to check that timing again. Last time I checked, my '95 2.3L starts at 14 degrees BTDC, and then retards to 12 degrees BTDC after 2000 rpm, remaining there for the rest of the rpm range. Doesn't sound right to me, but that's what it did and it runs fine.

'95 is "OBD 1.5", but really OBD-II compatible FWIW. Do you have a "Check Engine" light on? I'm thinking the IAC might be to blame.

Well I was pretty sure the timing was way off seeing as how it was 25 degrees advanced at idle. But I geuss my next question is how )if there is a way) do I adjust it? It is DIS. and I have the timing marks on the timing belt lined up. so my question is what would cause the timing to be so far off?
The engine light is not. I have not hooked a scanner to it yet either.
