Question Poor Mpg

I have averaged 11.5 mpg empty and 10.3 towing (TT 5000#) I have stock tires, 50/60 lbs. 3.55 gear, E40d. 139,000k. 96 PSD F250 SC, SB. My speeds between 60-70 mph. I put a homemade intake (Tymar style), DIY exhaust brake and thats all.
My questions is that reviewing the previuos owner´s average, it had 18-20 mpg. since he bougth the new truck (very carefully recorded), untill I bougth it, I dont know his habitus or speeds or towing, and the only difference I can tell you about the new status is that I am using Mexican Diesel (do I need any additives). Could that be the difference? or do you thing any other issues (injectors)?.
I would like to have at least 18 mpg. unlouded, because searching in the forums, it seems that the towing average is more or less, ok.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about the cetane levels in mexico but it could be an issue. Try using additives (diesel kleen or simular) and see if it helps.
11.5 mpg empty

Did you ever look into your smoke issue?

Thanks ForemanES, i m going to find out about adittives here in Mexico like diesel kleen or similar. In there how do you use it, what proportion or what?

No I didnt look into my smoke issue, the reason is that I dont drive the truck daily, and Im bussy in my work, i only last weekend hoisted the truck and reviewed all the powertrain and it looks fine, only an old known little leak between the motor and bell housing in the starter side, no clearly see where is its origin, maybe the gasket of the pan, because i cant find any other source, de valley has no fuel, etc. etc. No smell like diesel, not has the color of the ATF, and its more clear that the oil. so who knows?.
I m going to change the transmission fluid as soon as possible, like you told me and to put gauges.

Thanks again my friend

Maybe any other idea.

Most additives you just pore into the fuel tank. You have to read the intructions for proper mix ratio.

Let us know what you come up with the next time you drive it

the original owner might have had a programmer on it. I know when I removed my programmer my mileage went down the tubes. Lost 4mpg and all the power.

Thumbs up

I appreciate your opinions. Mexemo, I just received the downpipe from Tymar, so is the next step.

Brians97F250Crew, maybe you have reason, who knows, I didnt meet the previos owner, but the power is enough, only the poor mpg.

I asked some friend here in Mexico who has a Diesel Shop (only big trucks and mostly Cummins) and told me that the USA Diesel is better than the Mexican diesel and that the additives are not recommendables here, he told me to put an extra filter. So the Diesel by itself could be the main concern.

We dont have diesel kleen or similars. Here there are not syntetic ATF, can you imagine that? I also cant find a PSD Diesel mechanic, so FTE are my bible.

If there were a problem with the injectors, do I would have any other symptoms in my truck?

Thanks again.

Let me know if you ever get yours fixed cause i would really like to know whats wrong. no matter how i drive it or any mods i do it never goes up nor down, even with an addititive.
