Coolant Filter Re-Visited

Better cooling requires one item that the manufacturers have left behind, engine coolant filters.

I have been using Evans NGP+ coolant which required a full system flush and drain of the OEM coolant. Last year about this time I installed my own home brewed coolant filtration unit from items I purchased at my local NAPA Dealer. One year has passed and I cut open the filter to explore the casting sand would be trapped by the filter.

In my opinion a filtration system will definitely be a plus. My motivation was from an article that appeared here at FTE Click Here As I look back I wish I would have installed this system on my old 7.3 when I purchased it in 95, could have saved me plenty of dollars in water pump replacement.

Coolant Filter cut open HERE
As you can see the sand was completely covering the sides of the canister, filter pleats and bottom. The filter material would not show in a picture, only by feel.

If you have had thoughts on this subject I highly recommend this procedure.

I couldn't believe how much garbage had collected in the bottom of my radiator and wouldn't come out the petcock when we drained it to do the heads. I'm working on a "home cooked" coolant filter package too. Just looking for a filter base with sufficient openings for a good coolant flow.

Check on the Fleetguard 204163-S simple base, I could not find my old paper receipt, for starters. I use a FRAM spin on PR3383 filter. This is just a simple by-pass that T's into the coolant system.

I had about as much money in all the home brew as you would buying an already made kit, but I used Aeroquip hose and push on fittings for my set-up which are more expensive.

Glad it is working for you....

Upon seeing the coolant filter set-up I knew that this should be everybody's first mod.... take care of what you have before "modding it" with performance mods.

As I have always preached... a picture is worth a thousand words on "do coolant filters work"... and YES they do.

I bought the dieselsite.com's set-up as it is ready to go out of the box. I have posted pics in my gallery of the install and what the filters remove. I was so impressed with the set-up and filtration that I sent the same pictures to dieselsite.com and you will notice that they have used the same pics on their website (for the 6.0L) as I have posted in my gallery.

Again... I am surprised that more people don't sell and use coolant filters for all diesel motors. By the way... I changed my first filter at 5,000 or 6,000 miles so I do not recommend going a year on the first filter after being installed.

Kept an on my coolant return as to how well the filter was doing, I would agree with you on changing more often.

Coolant filters are a thing o' beauty. Personnally think they should be standard equipment on any diesel.

I have some options with some Bobcat stuff I'm gonna check on. Being a partsman has it's advantages!!! Hoses/fittings aren't a problem as I can custom make virtually anything from size 4 to 12. It's the filter/base combo I'm looking at. I wonder if any particular media works better with antifreeze than another and how about micron size?

Nice, John. How much for that little filter base? Napa did you say? Ballpark will do. I may not be able to even get one that cheap hopefully.

I have seen just the bracket for sale on another website... but can't seem to remember or saved it as a favorite since I had the dieselsite set-up.

Coolant filters are a special media made for the chemicals, flow rate and filtration rate. The 6.0L takes the "non-charged" filters with no SCA's in them (the 7.3L needed... but 6.0L uses long-life coolant).

Buy the dieselsite and enjoy... no one has ever complained and their service is great!!!! Just buy 2 extra filters since you will need them!!!!

One of those under $20 items for the base if I remember right. I made the bracket to replace the radiator mount and tie the filter base to. I had $80 in the whole project and not far off from buying a ready unit. The only thing I could not find was a small ball valve, I found plenty of valves but nothing compact.

Nope--I'm gonna buy the premade one. It's cheaper to have it all shipped to the house than run around and try to find all the parts. What I wanted from Bobcat was quite expensive even for ME and I just didn't see the need for all that extra stuff. Simple basic filter setup will be all good. I wanna spend my Christmas funds on a limited slip for the one wheel peeler.

I'm w/ Beechbum on this one. Dieselsite setup is complete, easy install and reasonable price. Can get all the filters you want as well as a reasonable price.

Check it out.
