Im trying to identify what gears are in my 76 F-150. What would be the easiest way to do this? All i know is that it is a ford 9 inch rear. And also when i put it in reverse it feels like the bed wants to hop all over the place what would make this happen? The clutch is brand new and the drive shaft has just been balanced. any help appreciated

No its 2 wheel drive. and by more info you mean? Its a 3 speed on the tree and when i put it in reverse unless i really ride the clutch the back end wants to hop all over the place. It has done it ever since i bought it. I replaced the clutch actually did a complete rebuild the tranny i got was a few inches longer in the tailshaft so i had the 2 peice driveshaft cut and balanced.
Thanks Tom

it doesn't mess up when you take off forward?with the longer tranny what'd you do about the tranny mount?i wouldn't think it was the rearend if it only does it in reverse.shocks, leafspring bushings, tranny mount.broken leaf spring?
Could it be clutch chatter? Maybe a little oil leaking onto the clutch? I had the same problem once and I too had to ride the clutch to keep the truck from 'bouncing" while going in reverse only. I believe the source of my oil leak was from the rear engine seal. Just a thought.
No it does not do it in any of the forward gears only reverse. The tranny mount is in the same place as on the original its only longer from the mount back to the tailshaft the original was like 3 inches and the one in it now it i beleive 6 1/2 in. from the mount to the end of the tailshaft. and like i said its a brand new clutch the motor was sent to the machine shop and bored and completly rebuilt all new seals the whole nine.
Im sure an oil leak is possible but i dont think thats the case here. Im just at a loss here.
