6.9/7.3 question

I have hear that the 6.9 and the 7.3 have the same block and you can take a 6.9 and turn it into a 7.3. is this true? If so, what all would need to be done in order to create a 7.3 out of a 6.9?

you just need to bore it out, that is all the 7.3 is, a bored over 6.9. I wouldnt bore out a 6.9, i would modify it.

So are the cranks and everything the same? How would you modify a 6.9?

the 7.3 is a 6.9 bored .110 over (Also the cause of cavitation). they went to bigger head bolts on the 7.3, changed the depth of the injectors.

Wreckinball, why would you use the 7.3 heads instead of the 6.9. I am thinking about swappin my barely running 89 7.3 out for a 6.9. I can pick up a 94 7.3 turbo motor w/turbo reman with only 80,000 but water in oil very cheap. I would like the heads just for the high temp valves.

6.9 and 7.3 cranks are different along with the Harmonic Balancer IIRC. So no the cranks aren't the same. I remember something with the balancing and the balancers can't be swapped.
As far as heads, I'd use the 6.9 heads on a 6.9 block with 7.3 rockers if the 6.9 is 86-older. (87 6.9's came with the updated rockers)

Crew what they claim is if you use the harmonic balancer from one to the other it is best to use the flywheel too, or vica verca. As far as I know is the cranks are the same and I used a 6.9 flywheel on one of mine without changing the balancer several years before I read this and it still has had no ill affects. You can use the 7.3 rockers and valves with the 6.9 heads, but the heads themselves will not interchange. I would never bore a 6.9 to 7.3 specs or any more than it takes to clean the cylinders up.
