hi george, welcome aboard .. when you say primed you mean you filled the new filter with clean fuel ?? It should start right up for ya if it was running before you changed the filter.
If it wont start, make sure the filter is full of clean fuel and crack the injection lines loose til there is plenty of fuel flowing, snug the lines and start it.

George,

Sounds like you somehow introduced a source for an air leak when you changed the filter.

Is the filter tight?

Did you loosen the tubing connections? Make sure they are tightened good.

Did you clean the bottom of the bowl good? Is the drain wheel at the bottom fully closed? Did you clean the schraeder valve at the bottom, make sure it does not leak air in?

Did you disturb any of the return rubber tubing. Sometimes when you touch these, (specially old hard rubber lines) they start to leak air once they have been disturbed. If the rubber hoses feel hard and look cracked, they should all be replaced along with the O-rings under the plastic cups on top of the injectors.

Sure sounds like you made yourself an air leak somewhere in the fuel system.

If it runs great and does not smoke much, then no need to worry about it.

All the rubber return lines, plastic caps and o-rings under the plastic caps should be replaced every 8 to 10 years or if you notice the rubber getting hard. The problem is that if the rubber components get hard they tend to stop sealing and let air into your fuel system which then causes cold starting problems.

Change your fuel filter regularily (every 25k) and find a good fuel station that sells diesel without water. Water in the fuel is really bad for your injection pump and injectors so avoid it by buying good fuel.
