I asked this question in the transmission section, but have had no replys. I will ask it here as I'm sure you guys have changed a gear or two.
I just bought a Dodge with a cummins for a engine swap in my '79 F250. I have 4:10 gears in the Ford, the Dodge has 3:54 gears. I think I will need to gear the Ford about the same to work with the Cummins/5 speed combo.
I have a D60 front and back for the Ford, and the Dodge has the same. Can I change the gears from the Dodge axels to the Ford's? If I had tons of money I'd just buy new, but I only have good looks, and the parts store don't take them as payment.
The rear gears will swap over. The front axle on the Ford should be a high pinion reverse cut so the Dodge gearset will not swap into the Ford front axle.
FWIW, 3.54's are very easy to find used. If you watch ebay you should be able to get that front set for under $50.
what ivan said but i wouldnt think you need to swap them out! i mean the lower gears you have the less stress on everything else (including driveshafts and u joints) and since you have a 5 speed transmission seems to me youd do better leaving it!
Thanks Ivan and Fish.
I actually got a chance to look the truck truck over a bit tonight after work. The Dooge has the low pinion so I can see how the gears will be different. I appreciate the tip on looking on ebay- there is a set on there now.
Fish, This truck will never see the kind of abuse that most 4X4's see. 20 years ago that may have been a different story.... I am more interested in good mileage.
